What is Rough House?

The story goes that in 1962 Frank Stack published the world's first underground comic book in Austin, Texas [1] -- followed shortly after by Jack Jackson. [2] The city's influence on comics since has not been negligible (including such luminaries as Gilbert Shelton & Chris Ware) [3] but has often slipped by with little fanfare. Since the world knows Austin for its music, tech startups, and breakfast tacos, we thought it was high time the city got back to its "comix" roots. And thus, Rough House was born. Three years (and three anthologies) later, we've expanded our operations to Seattle while retaining our presence in Austin. We publish select works in small editions by cartoonists who's work we respond to, as well as an annual anthology (published in collaboration with Raw Paw Press). Although we're all about print, we've also ventured into "web comics" that you can find in the "Steak Strips" section of this website. Yes, we take unsolicited submissions and, yes, we offer Risograph printing services. More info can be found in the links to your left. Enjoy your visit.
